Why Wa'ai?
Why did We start?
Iraqi high school students are facing a significant mental health crisis, propelled by deep-seated socio-political issues, war, and economic instability. This has led to widespread challenges, with 74% of Iraqi teenagers reporting they are burdened by school-related stress and 42% worrying about their appearance. This academic and social pressure is compounded by the trauma of conflict, leading to a high prevalence of disorders like PTSD , and has tragically been linked to student suicides.
Despite these shocking facts, there has been no complete mental health learning and care network specifically directed toward Iraq's youth. A lack of coping skills, combined with stigma and distrust in the system, prevents many from accessing the care they need. Wa'ai was created to fill this critical gap. It was launched to directly address these challenges, empower students with the tools to manage their emotions, and foster a safe, supportive environment where they can build resilience and thrive.
